"Redefining Truth in Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried"
This essay discusses Tim O'Brien's fictional collection of narratives on the Vietnam War that make up his novel The Things They Carried. I build upon the arguments of scholars Steven Kaplan and Robin Silbergleid, who claim O'Brien's strength is blurring the distinction between fiction and nonfiction. More than blurring the line, I argue that O'Brien's use of the literary technique of metafiction redefines the conventional definition of truth entirely.

A piece of creative writing, this piece addresses gay marriage rights in the United States. After discussing the issue, I propose a form a public discourse (a novel) that will educate the American public and sway public opinion. I assess the strengths and weaknesses of such a project and conclude with a call for action.

"It's Good to Be King"
A review of the Kings of Leon's fourth studio album "Only by the Night." Considering the band's growing European fan base, I discuss their potential for capturing the hearts of the American teenager.
